Another aspect

January 22nd, 2012

You’ve read here before about Caring For Kenya’s Kids (C4KK) and C4KK Children’s Shelter.  Helping to supply basic needs for orphaned children, widows and employing workers so they in turn can afford their families needs.  Today I’m going to show you another aspect of C4KK’s ministry.  We work with a friend, Ben, a local Kenyan and Executive Director of My Brother’s Keeper, who works with HIV/AIDS victims and those living in the slums.  We help support Ben on a case by case basis in which Chuck gets more detail on the situation, prays about it, asks God’s guidance and then proceeds with support if called to do so.  Here are a few stories of recent situations C4KK has supported.  Photos and captions are Ben’s:

This family had no water to use because there money to buy the precious commodity. I bought them soap and enough water to cook with, drink, wash their clothes and utensils, and most importantly to bathe with. Water is life.

The widow could not believe her eyes. She later told me she never even dreamt of getting good things like the items and food we brought her.

Today during our daily home visits i came across this woman and her baby. She is floorridden, pregnant (5 months), hiv+, has TB, vomiting, with a relentless diarrhea. She told me she had not eaten for many days.

When we arrived at Petronilla's house this morning.

Ben’s team cleaned the one-room home, cleaned mother and child, prepared food for them and the doctor came to check on her.  They brought the love of Christ directly into this mom and baby’s life.  ”She was so hungry and desperately ill even to talk. She murmered something like petronilla or something as her name. Today i get to go bathe them, clean the house and buy them anti diarhea and anti vomit medicines.”

Then bathed her for she had not fellowshiped with water for a very long time and badly needed one.

Feeding baby Mike whom we found eating her mother's feaces as there was nothing to eat.

There is no handshake or pat on the back which can reward Ben this side of Heaven for his love, care and concern for the “least of these”  but you can help Ben continue this work by donating at our secure donation site, marking “other” in the Allocation drop-down box and writing “Ben” in the comment section.  Those donations will be used on a case by case basis for helping these precious children of God.

Chuck will keep you informed on the cases which are supported by reposting Ben’s updates through Facebook.  Thank you in advance for your prayerful consideration in helping bring the love of Christ to so many.

A bit calmer today

January 17th, 2012

Actually I’m a lot calmer today compared to yesterday, thanks to prayer (not only my heart cries, but friends lifting me up) .  Today I haven’t heard anything from the student and I’m hoping that means he is back at school and staying!

It didn’t hurt either that I had three packages come in the mail so I got to end my day on a high note opening care packages which included pepperoni, Crystal Light drink mix, movies, beef jerky, Starbucks coffee and a few other items.  Thank you friends and family for sending the items!

I know life gives us all ups and downs and will continue to be that way until our final breath this side of Heaven.  My own personal issue is how to deal with those downs in a Christ-like manner and how to continue leaning on God during the ups.

“Two things I ask of you, LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.  Proverbs 30:7-9 (NIV)

Stocked kitchen!

January 12th, 2012

Now that the kitchen is almost complete (cupboards and drawers are being fixed as we speak) it was time to stock it.  We worked with our friend in Tala, Sumil at Sunny Lucky, to get bulk items and he always gives us the best price.

The kitchen is now stocked for about a month…that, of course, doesn’t include the daily needs of fresh items like garlic, ginger, potatoes, etc.  But as we get the crop rotation going in the shamba they won’t need to buy sukuma, cabbage, tomatoes, spinach and soon bananas.

getting stuff organized (that's Mary in the photo, Ann's helper)

Bags of beans, sugar, flour and maize

Milk, tea, spaghetti, flour, salt, soy pieces and green grams

Haul it all in!

Jacinta and Doris arrange the dishes

I brought magnetic letters recently and this is what the kids have done:

They also have enough clothes washing soap, bathing soap, toothpaste, valon (a lotion they use on their skin) and shoe polish to last the month.  Thank you Lord for the providence of a month’s supply of food and non-food items for the kids here at C4KK.  It looks great looking into the full cupboards!

Kitchen cupboards…yeah!!

January 5th, 2012

Kitchen cupboards are beginning to be installed and it’s already looking like a real kitchen!  Ann is overjoyed with the amount of work space she’ll eventually have, not to mention the amount of storage space.  Watching the kids help prepare lunch is a joy….all the talking, working, bumping into each other and just plain family time!

You may think “they’re just kitchen cupboards”, but to these kids and Ann (me too) it’s a show of God’s love and provision for them.  He continues to shower us with His love.  May we continually give Him the praise and glory for not only the new kitchen cupboards, but every aspect of daily life here at C4KK.

Welcome home!

January 4th, 2012

Look who’s home!  Scholar, Ceceliah and Pius!!!  They arrived today with all their paperwork and are now living at C4KK!  It’s been a long, bumpy road for them to finally get here….birth certificates in the making for weeks for one thing.  But what a wonderful blessing and bright spot for the day!  I know, I’m using a lot of exclamation points, but I am so excited to finally  have them home!!

They arrived with little possessions and in their school uniform but as you can see from their smiles they don’t mind and simply are happy to be home.  Shortly after they arrived it was lunch time and I couldn’t help just looking at them eating with their family.

My prayer is this will be a beautiful beginning for their lives, they will forget about the “other” home they lived in and the conditions there and know they are loved and accepted at C4KK, their new home!  Thank you Lord for awesome homecomings like this!

Chapatti time!

January 2nd, 2012

Today the kids (and Ann) made chapatti for lunch.  Fresh chapatti is simply yummy!  As you can see it helps to have many hands helping to make it and Naomi seems to really enjoy rolling out the dough!  She’s on the left.

It really is a blessing too that they can make chapatti more often, not only on special occasions.  The Lord blesses with fresh chapatti!

December 27th, 2011

Hello there!  I know it’s been awhile since my last blog post and I apologize.  So this post will update you on the past few days…including Christmas.

Needless to say this has been another “interesting” holiday for me.  It’s the second Christmas away from friends and family and that made things a little difficult for me.  Dealing with the emotional aspect of the holiday was certainly a drain, but as always God saw me through.

Chuck and I stayed in Nairobi just before Christmas and basically hung out there (with our friends the Brooks family).  It was a great way for me to relax.  We didn’t do much but what we did do was nice.  We sat at the Ya-Ya Center (a mall) eating Chinese food and as blacks, whites, Indian and Chinese people walked around not one person stared at us, pointed at us, yelled mzungu or Brit at us and not one person came up and asked us for something.  That in itself was a blessing and was emotionally relaxing.  You may not understand that but believe me, it was wonderful.  We also saw a movie (Sherlock Holmes 2).  I’m talking a real movie in a real movie theatre!  Although I was very tired from staying up until 2 in the morning because of the very fast internet where we were staying, the movie experience was great.

Returning home we began preparing for Christmas day at C4KK.  We took most of the food items to C4KK on Christmas Eve and basically organized stuff there.  We did however receive an unexpected visitor.  Our neighbors, Andrew and Ziporah, came by with a truck load of donated food items from Andrew’s employer.

Items included eggs, juice, bread, flour, salt, oil and many more yummy goodies!

The fridge is now full…at least until after Christmas!  Thankfully electricity is working – somewhat.  Some sockets work, others don’t.  Light switches turn on lights in other rooms and sockets work then don’t.  Yeah, bugs need to be worked out.

Christmas day arrived and we began the morning handing out the gifts…well let me elaborate, we wanted to hand out gifts around 10 but many of the kids were still taking showers (remember buckets of water needed to be heated up for each person) so we waited for a bit then finally told them to take showers after we were done.  I needed to get started on the chicken so we had to begin soon.  Everyone sat around the tables, I asked if everyone was there and no, 2 girls had walked to Joska for shoes.  Oh well, they would have to get their Christmas gift once they arrived.

Let me first give a shout out to Moses for helping me with photos. I taught him how to use my point and shoot in order for me to be in a few pictures!  He did a great job, thanks Moses!

Chuck gave a short message.

Then we handed out gifts, everyone received a backpack.  Oh and the 2 girls arrived just in time to hear the end of the message and get their gift with everyone else.

and yes that is a bug in the middle of my back! Don't know how long it was there before flying away.

And we bought one gift for the group, a boom box.  Boy did they like that and they like to listen to their music loud!

The boy next to Chuck is Moses...my photographer in training!

As I began making fried chicken the kids danced, had a snack and were having a good time celebrating together.

Nancy helped by making bread crumbs for the coating.

Since I was cooking I didn't get any video, sorry. Chuck got some on his phone and I'm hoping to download that soon.

These biscuits (cookies) were donated by a local shopkeeper (Sumil) from Tala. He has helped with many items at C4KK, thanks!

Finally time for lunch!  Lunch consisted of green grams, corn, chapatti, fried chicken and juice.

After lunch we took a walk around the compound.

thought it was nice of Moses to take this photo :)

Then it was time for more sugar!  Yup, Christmas cookies and milk.

Overall it was a great day for the kids, they really seemed to enjoy themselves.  We left for home around 5 and thought we’d be coming home to relax after a long day (again, it was emotionally draining for me) and skyping with our kids (and parents and siblings).  As I walked into the house I smelled something horrible and found that Bella had poo’ed in the spare room, not once but three times!  We’ve found that when Bella goes “carousing” for a few days he tends to lose his house manners.  He was immediately kicked out.  I cleaned up the mess while Chuck worked on his internet to get skype up and running.  But that wasn’t working out either…internet was terrible and wouldn’t connect, so no skyping.  But God granted us a blessing in that the network would at least work enough for an hour long conversation with the kids (and my mom and sister).

It really seemed satan was trying to sabotage the day, but he just couldn’t win…God was in charge of the day and He would be glorified even in cleaning up cat poo (He gave me the strength not to literally kick Bella out of the house!)

Though it was another year of celebrating Christmas differently the kids had a good time, heard the gospel message and hopefully saw the love of Christ.

Here we all are! God bless us, everyone!

Home again, home again

December 21st, 2011

Had to put in a small reference to the book I recently finished reading….The Book.  Very interesting book in my opinion :)

Anyway, we are heading home today from Nairobi. It’s been a fun few days of living the city life compared to village life.  We stayed up late working on computers and phones because of the incredibly fast internet (still not as fast as you all have in US, but comparably fast for us in the village).  I was able to catch a movie in an actual movie theatre!  We saw Sherlock Holmes and I thoroughly enjoyed the stop action and slo-mo of the film (ok Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t so bad either!).  There aren’t many theaters here in Kenya (approximately 10 in the entire country) so I was lucky to find a theater which actually had a movie I wanted to see – many films are from India and not exactly my type of movie.  I got to eat a salad and it was delicious!  No lettuce in the village so it’s been about 6 months since my last salad :(

The mall we walked around at had Christmas lights up and a cool breeze was blowing at night so it kind of reminded us of Christmas back in Phoenix.  Oh and we actually heard Christmas music playing in the stores!  It really almost brought tears to my eyes…darn that Frosty the Snowman!

That’s why you haven’t heard from me the past few days.  We were actually going to stay until tomorrow but decided to head home to prepare for the big Christmas dinner with the kids at C4KK.  I have a feeling this will be like  no other Christmas for them and I would like to thank God here and now for the providence to allow this to happen.

In case I don’t get back on the blog for a few days….have a very blessed Christmas celebrating God’s gift to us.

God’s abundance!

December 8th, 2011

Time for a shamba update.  The kids have been eating the cabbage, sukuma and tomatoes from the shamba…yeah God!  Looks to be a plentiful season!

this is just a portion of the cabbage!

and they are a nice size too!

lots of tomatoes at various stages to eat and pick later

one lone eggplant....not sure if any more will actually grow.

a view through the tomatoes

(from left) Lewis, Chuck and Roman discuss the newer portion of the shamba on what needs to be done

And Ann received another piece of furniture…a wardrobe.  Since I’ve known her (3 years) she has always stored her clothes in suitcases, now she has a nice place to hang her clothes!

She was pretty happy to unpack the suitcases and rearrange her clothes in this nice wardrobe!

Greetings!

December 7th, 2011

Thought introductions were finally in order.  C4KK now has 2 “local” cows (unlike the zero-grazing cow we will get once the animal enclosure is finished).  These cows need no special food or shelter and are able to graze around the property.  When they were first left at C4KK they were nervous and could hear their moms leaving.  That was all it took for the two to run towards mom and break down the neighbors fence to be reunited.  Bosco went running after them and it was decided to leave moms with the calves for the day.

Our cows (circled) are reunited (for the day) with mom

Once end of day came it was a real struggle to get the calves into their pen without mom.  After about an hour they were finally settled into their pen…not particularly happy with lots of moo’ing for mom.

The next day however they were left to graze and they seemed to be getting familiar with their surroundings.  So I would like to introduce Fudge and Splash:

We also brought Viggo to C4KK to meet his new “pack”.  He seemed quite comfortable on the ride up!

And he got to meet everyone and they were all pretty excited to meet him!

they even wanted to rest with Viggo...he's towards the back left on the floor, with a few others!

Although not everyone was happy to meet Viggo.  Goldie is still getting used to this rambunctious puppy.

wonder if they'll ever be friends?

Now you’ve met the new additions to C4KK.
