A bit of background before getting into this post. Annastacia (house mom for Caring For Kenya’s Kids children’s shelter) has requested we fill 10 liter containers from our sink because she says it tastes better than what they can draw from a nearby well. She has used well water for several years but likes the taste of the well water from our compound. (I can neither confirm nor deny this as I have never tasted either well water sites!) Recently I was filling 2 of these containers in the morning so Chuck could take them with him to the property and for a split second I thought “I really don’t like doing this, I have other stuff to do” and pretty much as soon as that thought crossed my mind 2 verses came to mind:
The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
and
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15
How could I grumble about filling a container with fresh water when all I had to do was turn on a tap? Knowing that in order for Annastacia to even get water (for drinking, bathing, washing dishes and clothes,cooking, etc.) she has to put two 50 liter containers in a wheelbarrow and push it about 1/4 mile on a dirt road, hand crank a bucket down into the well, hand crank it back up and dump the bucket into the container…approximately 3 times for each 50 liter container.
Turning on a tap is such a small thing for me to do yet because of my deceitful heart I had the fleeting thought to just not do it. I thank God for His gentle reminder from His word and the kick in the pants I needed to remind me how blessed I am to have running water and to share that blessing with Annastacia.
As a side note, construction continues on the building for the children’s shelter and we are hoping to have a well on-site so Annastacia can get water right from the tap!
