I was reminded recently of a conversation I had with two of our boys at Nice View Academy, Caffe and Tati (see them in the video). Both are very outgoing and not embarrassed about asking any questions, which we encouraged. They asked me why we had different skin colors. I told them to look around nature and see all the different colors. (look at the lilies of the field, not even Solomon was clothed in such splendor – Matthew 6:28-29) Wouldn’t the world be quite mundane if everything and everyone were the same color? Maybe the Lord gave us different skin colors because He loves color. Maybe we are different colors so we can learn to look past our external differences and see how alike we are as a fallen people in need of Christ (didn’t the One who made the outside also make the inside? Luke 11:40)
Then I asked them a question – “because you have been around me for a couple of months, does my skin color make me any different than you, other than color?” No was their response, but where they perceive a difference was people with lighter skin tend to have more money and/or opportunities. It was the perfect time for me to explain the opportunities they are given. Because God moves hearts around the world and people support Saved By God’s Grace (…defend the cause of the fatherless…) and because God moved Chuck and I with a desire to be with them in Kenya (…encourage the oppressed…) and because God moved Gideon (director of Nice View Academy) to open the school/orphanage, Magie (founder of Eldama Ravine Children’s Village) to take in her first orphan and Annastacia (house mom at Mercy Child Foundation) to stay with the children (…seek justice) they have the opportunity to be educated, fed, clothed and most importantly given the opportunity to see God in action, learn of His unending love and accept His saving grace.
Thank you to all our supporters who help ‘Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.’ Isaiah 1:17
