Kids all over Kenya are now on break from school. Their school year goes January – December, three months on, one month off. December is break time! I write that with an exclamation mark but many of the children do not enjoy break, for many reasons. Some simply enjoy school, others are at home with no food (at Nice View we feed the kids two meals a day-breakfast of porridge and lunch of beans/maize and cabbage), some are in abusive situations (either verbal or physical-many of the children are made to work while they are at home and I’m not talking about chores).
The orphans who live at the Academy continue living there but the rest who go home find themselves drifting back to Nice View during breaks (April, August, December). During most breaks the Academy offers tutoring for the children but because of lack of funds we were not able to offer it during December break (no funds to pay the teachers and feed all the kids), but some parents (the ones able to pay) are making arrangements with the teachers themselves for tutoring during the holiday.
We are looking forward to being with the kids year ’round; studying, eating, playing, sharing the Good News, encouraging each other and living together as the body of Christ!
As it says in The Message in Deuteronomy:
Gather the people together—men, women, children, and the foreigners living among you—so they can listen well, so they may learn to live in holy awe before God, your God,…do this so that their children, who don’t yet know all this, will also listen and learn to live in holy awe before God….
