I tried making tea (chai) like we have in Kenya – tea leaves boiled in a bit of water and milk with some tea masala (spices) mixed in, but it didn’t turn out very well.  As a matter of fact it was down-right yucky!  It must be the special blend of herbs & spices in the tea leaves themselves that make it unique.

On a visit one day with Magie, founder of Eldama Ravine Children’s Village and here in nursing school, she made Kenyan tea and it tasted just like back home!  She had the actual tea leaves, which can be purchased here in the States at certain African stores, however we only have a West African store in Phoenix but the tea is different, we need an East African store, go figure!

Before leaving Magie’s she graciously gave me some tea leaves and I was able to make Kenyan tea!  I made tea everyday after that and it tasted wonderful!  Thanks Magie!!

Isn’t it funny how one little thing can bring back so many memories?  I remember sitting at the Academy’s office drinking tea with Gideon and discussing the rest of the day or coming home from a trip to Nairobi and having tea before bed…so many fond memories and if I can find some of that tea here I can create more memories here before returning to Kenya, because I found out that Tarrin loves chai too!
