Kenya is voting on a new constitution Wednesday and here are some points on how they “get ready” (information from Daily Nation, a Kenyan newspaper):
- Nearly 70,000 police officers on duty to make sure people are safe during and after voting
- 10 hotlines set up to report any “security threats”
- up to 63,000 additional staff to provide security during the referendum
- current law states the campaigns (yes & no camps) are to stop advertising and/or canvassing for votes 24 hours before the vote
- August 4th (voting day) is declared a holiday
- public servants are given the afternoon of August 3rd off to ensure they can make it to their vote casting location in time
- voting ballots will be under police escort and guarded until after the vote
- the Kenya power company said they have “taken adequate measures to ensure the national vote tallying centre at the Bomas of Kenya is not affected by blackouts.”
My prayer is for all Kenyans with the ability to vote to have the strength, courage and motivation to do so and God to move in this country for His glory and the good of those who love Him. Please keep Kenya, August 4th and the days following the vote in your prayers for cool heads to prevail and the violence that occured after the last election will not take place. We’ll keep you posted as we hear.
