Yesterday we traveled to Kinyui Boys High School to drop off 2 students to begin their secondary education. Chris and Kelvin were pretty excited about going and we did the last of the school shopping in the morning. Then they organized their foot lockers and labeled everything:
They packed everything into the truck and we were off. It was a bumpy, dusty and long drive through back roads (and believe me you haven’t seen a back road until you’ve driven THESE back roads!) until we finally came to the high school. We introduced ourselves at the admin office, the boys filled out paperwork, we talked with the principal (who I believe seems like a good guy and really wants all the boys at his school to succeed), tried to get their uniforms (didn’t have their sizes so hopefully in the next day or two), then waited for the boarding master (yup that’s what the housing administrator is called). After waiting we were finally told he was in a meeting and to leave the boys and they would get their blankets and sheets that evening. May sound like a quick afternoon but we arrived at around 11:30 and didn’t leave until around 4:30…nothing, it seems, is ever simple or quick in Kenya!
We discussed with the boys what would happen during mid-term; how they would get back to Tala, have a medical form filled out, meet up with their guardian then head to their homes for a week before going back to school. Then we said our goodbyes and were off – making just one wrong turn and asking a few 7 or 8 year olds how to get out of the bush!
I’m sure the boys are both excited and nervous about this new stage in their lives, but I pray they are both strong young men and rely on God’s wisdom to see them through the transition period and beyond.
