Didn’t realize how much I’ve missed joking with friends until today. I called Willy, the driver we use when we go to Nairobi or picking someone up from the airport, to schedule him to take Charlotte back into Nairobi tomorrow, gonna miss her :(. We’ve worked with Willy for over a year and he knows when we say 8am or 10pm or 3am we mean 8, 10 or 3! Don’t show up an hour later and don’t come to the compound with an empty gas tank. Come prepared and ready to leave and he has always done that.
When I called him today I asked him to be at the compound Friday morning at 10am…without missing a beat he says “10 is awful early.” It totally caught me off guard because not many Kenyans we know either get our humor or can joke like this. It ran though my head real quick “did I say 10pm? But if I did why would he say that’s early? What is he talking about?” Then he kind of laughed and said “yes, yes I’ll be there at 10am” Then I got it…he was pulling my leg!
After I hung up I thought “wow, that was kind of nice, joking like that!” Seems Chuck and I are reciting movies lines to ourselves and not getting many laughs or saying a funny retort to someone only to have to explain it and then it loses all funniness. And I guess after re-reading this post you might not find it funny, but I did and it was refreshing!
