The past few weeks we’ve had a very difficult time here in Tala getting milk, cheese and butter. During a trip to Nairobi we were able to purchase a couple blocks of cheese but even there I couldn’t find butter. I decided, while at Sunny Lucky (our local supermarket owned by our friend Sunil who has helped us many times by getting items in bulk for the kids, giving us the best prices on water tanks, a generator and other items), to purchase what I thought was margarine, Blue Band is the brand name. We brought it home and used it to cook a packet of noodles my mom had sent…mistake! The stuff (Blue Band) just wouldn’t combine with the other ingredients….it basically sat on top. You know they say oil and water do not mix and I can vouch for that! I had also used it for grilled cheese sandwiches.
The entire meal just didn’t taste “right”….too oily in my opinion. The next day Chuck went into Sunny Lucky and when he put a different brand of margarine on the counter to purchase Sunil asked what he was doing. Chuck told him the story and Sunil went to the cooler, dug down deep and produced a block of butter! He handed it to Chuck and said, “you can buy this one, it’s my personal stash but I still have some at home.”
When Chuck brought home the butter (kind of like bringing home the bacon only better!) and told me the story I was thrilled. Not just because we now had butter but a simple thing like offering his personal stash of butter was a gesture of friendship. When I thanked Sunil the next day he just brushed it off as no big deal.
Thank you friend for your kind gesture!
