Ok, so we are attempting to prepare the staff for our 4 month leave (in less than 20 days we’ll be on a plane to the US). There is so much to go over with them, but here are a few items:
- logistics of getting food here (we have the banking/paying part down it’s actually getting the food from Tala to C4KK)
- how to get cooking gas (without the truck they’ll have to use public transportation)
- shopping for the secondary kids when they return to school in September
- teaching how to set up the movie equipment for the kids to continue watching movies
- setting up emails and teaching basic computer skills
While we were in a staff meeting yesterday Chuck asked about emergencies and how they would be handled. If a child is in an emergency situation how would they get him/her to the doctor in Ruai (about 12 miles away)? There were five other adults in the meeting (besides Chuck and I) ranging in age from 24-48 and when asked who could drive no hands were raised. Granted Bosco has driven the truck before in the shamba (not on the roads) but he doesn’t have a license.
We are first praying for no emergencies but if there are we are praying those people we know in the area who have a vehicle will come to the aid of the child…but we just don’t know and therefore put it in God’s hands.
It’s one of those things where they will deal with what they can, how they can. That doesn’t mean I’ll be callous to the situation but I also believe this will be a tremendous learning lesson for everyone involved. They may surprise themselves with how much they can handle on their own!
