…toilets! Many of us may take this facility for granted but there are many more who either do not have (using the fields for their bathroom) or it is in such ruin that it’s almost the same as not having. We’ve seen toilets (basically a hole in the ground) with branches holding scrapes of plastic to surround the hole, toilets with wooden floors covering the hole and so rotted out from the urine and feces the owners are in fear of falling in and toilets which are the trees and grasses near someone’s home.
These conditions are unsanitary, which leads to disease, and unsafe. We have worked with our outreach partners to build safer and more sanitary toilets for people. The construction varies depending on the area but reinforcing the floors, building a seat for an elderly man, constructing wood or metal walls for privacy are some of the ways we are helping.
Grandma Pauline was assisted with a new home (her old home was mud construction and fell into the river) and after she was able to move in we helped with a kitchen and toilet. Here’s the work on the toilet.
Trench digging is all done by hand and we certainly appreciate this young ladies assistance! Mary has a great work ethic and I’m so proud of all her hard work. She has graduated from Nairobi Aviation College and is looking for an internship in cabin crew but in the meantime she’s digging trenches!
Building the foundation and floor of the latrine, this particular type is called a “long drop” toilet.
Setting the sanitation pipes and seeing the toilet mounted is another reason to praise God!
Peter has done a great job of supervising this project and Grandma Pauline has been praising God for His provision, through you, for her new home, kitchen and toilet! Thank you!
