Recently BBC published an interactive map showing the percentage of people who have paid bribes for 95 countries (Kenya ranked #4).  We can testify from personal experience that corruption touches every aspect of life here in Kenya.  But that’s not necessarily what I’m writing about (it’s too depressing and could be summed up as….corruption is the norm, not the exception).

Today I heard from one of our secondary students outside C4KK.  As I mentioned in a previous post he was quite concerned about getting back to school.  He is in Form 4 and preparing to take his final exam in October of this year.  He went to his school yesterday to check on the status of students returning to school (primary teachers are still on official strike but secondary teachers have been called back to school).  The principal told him he couldn’t stay because the school didn’t have food to feed the students.  Now let me explain…..we paid his Term 2 (of which we are in the middle of) fees and those include food.  This was an unexpected strike and therefore the school SHOULD HAVE food for the students.  He came back home, called his fellow student leaders and they went to talk with the vice-principal.  They explained in a respectful, non-violent manner school fees had been paid and the school must have the food to feed the students.  He received a call last night saying the Form 4’s could return to school!  Why the Form 1’s, 2’s and 3’s can’t return I have no idea, but at least the Form 4’s can begin their studies and prepare for their exam.

It’s stories like this which make me think there could be a change for the better in this country.  We applauded this student for his resourcefulness, thought process and action he took in this situation.  I personally believe this country needs more people like him who will hold those in authority accountable for what they are supposed to do and what they say they will do.

Lord may you continue to share Your wisdom with those who seek Your guidance and may Your hand be upon those You have chosen to be future leaders of this country.
