Last Monday was Madaraka Day (commemorates the day that Kenya attained internal self-rule in 1963, preceding full independence from the United Kingdom on 12 December 1963).  The kids knew they wouldn’t have school on Monday so Sunday evening we received a text from them (they were using Peter’s phone, with his permission of course) stating they would like to have meat since it has been a long time that they’ve had meat and they signed it “from your lovely C4KK kids”!  Chuck wrote them back (yes we are only a few yards from the home but I guess they wanted to text) stating they just had meat that morning, sausages, so what specifically were they talking about.  Another text came through saying…beef and chicken!

So we walked over to the children’s home to discuss having beef and chicken for the Madaraka Day celebration (honestly I don’t think they really thought of the holiday, they just knew they weren’t going to be in school so why not celebrate!).  First we had to make sure they understood sausage was meat.  Yes they understood that but wanted something different.

They had already anticipated asking for meat for Monday (and hoping to get an affirmative answer) because they discussed with the matron on switching the chapatti from Sunday to Monday to have with the meat….good planning on their part and I told them so.  We had a feast of beef stew, chicken stew, cabbage and chapatti…oh and soda too!

That day we also received our Sunday clothes which were made for the kids (thank you donor!). I did ask them if they would tuck in the shirts when going to church, they all said they would.  They all look so smart in their nice, new clothes!

With some attitude..or as they say with some “style”!

And then we had May birthday celebration. Philes (house matron) made a cake by steaming it!  I thought that was pretty creative of her and it tasted delicious!
