One thing I’ve seen in Kenya (and this is not just a “Kenyan” problem, it’s a world wide problem) is hypocrisy. However since I’m now living in Kenya let me explain from this perspective. We have many preachers who will offer to pray for you….once you send them money. Do we not know that prayer is free? Why do we think someone has to pray for us to make it a legitimate prayer? Does their prayer mean it’s more sincere than the cry from a sinners heart?
Our God is a big God with the capacity to hear us wherever we are, whatever we say (and think) and yearns for us to talk to Him.
All my longings lie open before you, Lord;
my sighing is not hidden from you. Psalm 38:9
In my devotional recently it said (in regards to this verse) “David understood that we can cast all our cares on the Lord, even if no one else prays for us.” Amen! WE can pray to God, WE can cry out to Him for strength, WE can thank Him for His many blessings….we don’t have to pay someone to do the talking for us.
Now I’m definitely not saying we shouldn’t ask people to pray for us. What I am saying is it shouldn’t cost us….it’s a free form of communication the Lord put in place for us and we should consider it a privilege to listen to someones request for prayer and then lift it up to our Father. Praying brings us closer to God because of the relationship we are building, not because of what we say or what we are asking for or what we are thanking Him for. Praying continues to open our hearts to His joy and allows us to empty ourselves of us and replace it with more of Him.
So if you ask someone to pray for you and they request money….turn around and begin talking to God instead. He won’t charge you a penny/shilling.
