We’ve been told:
“please take our burden” referring to their child
“I don’t want extra baggage” referring to having a cousin stay with her while undergoing cancer treatment
We’ve seen:
church members leave church only to walk around a dying man without even a glance in his direction
family members refuse to help, in even the smallest way, another family member
We’ve worked with:
children who have been abused in so many horrible ways
adults who continually cheat and lie in order to get a few shillings
We’ve dealt with corruption:
When asked by a government official why we were even in Kenya (stating we should just send money) and we told her we were here because God called us to help the watoto (children) of Kenya she responded “watoto are born and die every day in Kenya, I don’t care.”
Police not responding to a dead body in the river because they didn’t have petrol for their vehicle.
This is the VERY, VERY short list of what we’ve dealt with in our 8 years working in Kenya.
However, we get the tiniest breath of fresh air…..
- we were told, after delivering a bed, “God has remembered me”
- assisting a student to finish their high school education, “God brought you into my life and I was able to graduate”
- after putting a roof onto a widows home she says her and her children will “sleep the whole night without any worry”
- helping an elderly couple with health issues and building them a shower/toilet area (they were uses the bushes) we were told “the love [we] experienced throughout your stay here is enough to make [us] live 50 years more”
We happen to be the instrument used to set these in motion but these words are for everyone who has played a role through this ministry, whether that be financially, prayerfully, or literally being the hands and feet. It truly is the little things through God’s grace which He grants us in order to continue. He shows us a glimpse of what is being accomplished through this ministry (something He doesn’t have to do but I’m very thankful He does) and if one person has come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ I say Praise God!
