Going beyond the walls is exactly what Saved By God’s Grace and Caring for Kenya’s Kids (C4KK) has done over the past few years and what a joy and blessing it has been to watch God grow this ministry
What do I mean by “going beyond the walls”? When we first landed in Kenya we thought working with a local school was where our home base would be, but God moved us into a different direction. That’s when a group of children came into our lives and we built the children’s home for a safe environment for them to live. After several years it was decided (through discussions with social workers and much prayer) to reintegrate the children back into their home villages while still supporting them financially (through sponsors and donors). This will reunite them with families which will allow the children to grow up in a typical Kenyan setting but with the knowledge they will go to school and have access to medical and food aid.
One way we try to explain this is imagine raising your child in Disney Land. The child eats, sleeps, is educated, plays and never leaves Disney Land during their school years. Then when they graduate from high school you drop them in downtown Phoenix (or Detroit or any other large, metropolitan city) and say this is real life now. Even though we talked with our kids over and over about what “real life” was in Kenya, they were still shell shocked with the conditions in which they would have to live and work in.
Living with their families will give them the opportunity to live life in a typical setting…they’ll fetch water, work in the shamba (garden), tend the animals, wash clothes, etc. Then after graduating or moving away from their homes they will be aware of how life is lived in Kenya.
During this time the ministry grew into food programs, a medical clinic, jigger treatment programs, assisting families with school fees, taking medical care to HIV/AIDS victims, Bible studies, community building, and so much more. God is being heard and seen in several areas throughout Kenya and Saved By God’s Grace is definitely moving beyond the walls!
