“…some people without brains do an awful lot of talking don’t they?” (Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz) Many times I’ve sat in on conversations and thought “I might have something interesting to say” only to begin talking and find I’m talking in circles! In Ecclesiastes it says
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
This is one reason why I love to quote Scripture. Instead of focusing on something interesting I might have to say, I focus on what Christ has already said on the subject.
In the 3rd chapter of James it says “the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.” I hold Scripture to be “pure…full of mercy…impartial” and a great way to express a point but I definitely do not have all the answers. God continues to teach me through His Holy Scripture, other believers and sometimes non-believers who may challenge my view on a subject.
When I quote Scripture I may tell you how it relates to a situation I’m going through (or gone through) and how God worked in my life. Basically it’s my testimony of what God has and is doing in my life. As I quoted earlier “there is nothing new under the sun”, so maybe what I’ve experienced can encourage others. We are told in 2 Corinthians “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (emphasis added).
