They came and gathered around the office door in eager anticipation for….
– a new game?
– a sweet?
– lunch?
nope they were waiting for their new school uniform! As they were standing by grades I glanced over the group and noticed sweaters that were ripped and torn, a few sweaters had the arms off them because they had come apart, shirts had no buttons, shorts were torn and being held on with a belt, dresses had rips up the sides and socks were hanging around their ankles. Yea these kids needed a new uniform because their old one was literally falling off them. And yet these were the lucky ones because many didn’t even have a uniform and in Kenya going to school without a uniform is a no-no. We wouldn’t send any child home because they didn’t have one but if a government official stopped by they could send any child home who didn’t have the appropriate uniform.
We expressed this need for new uniforms and Bobbie, who is coming to visit us this Friday for a week and we’ve never even met other than on the Internet, decided to tell a few friends at the school she works at just before school was letting out for the summer of the kids’ uniform needs. She told us not to expect too much because it was only 5 days before school was out but after those 5 days she had collected over $800! Thanks Bobbie and all those who donated for your help with putting a smile on these kids’ face.
Gideon then organized for Tala Garments to come to the school on Monday to fit the kids for their new uniform and got the students all lined up and ready. That’s where we found them, around the office door waiting!
