I’m thinking the frenetic pace of the holiday has begun in the US – if I’m not mistaken it probably started sometime in July! It’s different here…I haven’t seen any advertisements for items I “just can’t live without” (although I have to admit we do not have tv, radio, newspapers or magazines screaming in our faces either), no Christmas decorations covering compounds and no floods of Christmas party invitations. We, on the other hand, are praying for rain so the harvest will be abundant enough to feed the kids.
So, you ask, what does praying for rain have to do with Christmas? Let me give you a bit of background –
Chuck and I recently felt the Holy Spirit leading Saved By God’s Grace to not just “giving a fish” but “teaching to fish” (In case you’ve never heard the Chinese proverb…”give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime.”) After much prayer, from ourselves, the board of directors, friends and family, we felt a door opening for just such a self/God-sustaining opportunity in the form of farming. Currently we are leasing 5 acres of land, planting 3 acres of watermelon (cash crop) and 2 acres of beans and maize (both staple items here in Kenya).
The problems with leasing land? The expense of on-going, yearly lease payments and possibly being kicked off the land at any time, irregardless of how well the farm is doing.
Now that brings us to what this has to do with Christmas – here’s an opportunity for you, your family, friends and/or coworkers give a gift that continues giving year after year:
