Kenya has begun their 2009 census and they had several “interesting” questions…
Here is an email from Pauline (wife of Gideon, who is the Director at Nice View Academy/Orphanage in Tala, Kenya-one of the three orphanages we work with) explaining some of the process and what they thought of it:
“Sister, we were counted last night and the enumerators took up to 45min with us to gather data .We answered questions such as the number of people who spent monday night in the house, religion, number of livestock, whether our children attend public or private school, water source, materials used to build our home, type of toilet, energy used, etc. The questions were just too many and one was lefr wondering if some of them were important. They used a comprehensive attempt to collect data on the standards of living of Kenyans and visitors to the country.Grace and Eric were surprised by the census methods because it being their first experience to be counted, they thought they would only line up to be counted. It was such an experience for them”
One question was regarding ownership of camels, and our friends, Johnny and Kate with A Future and A Hope in Nakuru, Kenya joked that they had to answer no! And why find out who stayed home on Monday nights? Monday Night Football?!
I don’t know what Kenya will do with the information so it’s a “wait and see” game…
