Many times as we drive home from C4KK we go the back way and this means driving past homes. One home in particular has around 5 or 6 kids there and every time we drive past we hear “how are you sweet?” I guess they’ve been told to ask a mzungu “how are you?” but they also want to ask for a sweet (sucker/lollipop) and since we are driving by in the truck instead of waiting for our answer to “how are you?” they combine the two into “how are you sweet?” And usually the ‘sweet’ is pronounced and strung out…”how are you sweeeeeet?”
I admit it was cute the first couple hundred times but after hearing it all the time it gets a bit old. Sometimes they will even yell it at the truck, we have no idea where they are but they don’t want to miss the chance we may stop and hand out sweets.
Our sweet handing out has tapered off but since we started the habit it now seems to be expected, hence “how are you sweeeet?”
